Constantinople jostled with other major historical cities, such as Baghdad, Chang’an, Kaifeng and Merv for the position of the world’s largest city until the 12th century. In the Ottoman period, it was first granted to Nişancı Feridun Ahmed Bey in the 16th century, before being granted by Sultan Murad IV to the Safavid Emir Gûne Han in the 17th century, hence the name Emirgan. The 47-hectare (120-acre) park was later owned by Khedive Ismail Pasha of Ottoman Egypt and Sudan in the 19th century.
